Trip Overview
The upper Deschutes is a mysterious place. In the upper 40 miles of water you can find a variety of fish species ranging from fat Brook trout to trophy Brown trout depending on where you fish. There is also a large population of rainbow trout and whitefish. Growing up as a kid I always recall hearing stories of giant Browns being pulled from the Wickiup area of the Deschutes both above and below the reservoir. It's hard to imagine any other species than the elusive German Brown being in there until you catch a wild Rainbow on a small Blue-Winged Olive on a calm late summer evening.
There are three fishable stretches of water here. The stretch below Wickiup down to Sunriver is a full day in the driftboat, winding through massive log jams and steep, volcanic, basalt bends in the river. The next section of fishable water is near Sheeps bridge, an old bridge constructed in the early 20th century used by farmers to access the vast meadows the Deschutes provided for their livestock and of course sheep. Much of this bridge still stands to this day and provides that old timey historic feeling while you wade around the river in search of trophy sized Rainbows and Browns. The last fishable stretch is near the headwaters of the Deschutes above Crane Prairie where the river shrinks into a small creek choked by long grass and endless log jams. Here is where you will find your Brookies and Rainbows, Hidden below these log jams, these feisty fish wait to ambush your dry flies. This stretch really provides that classic small creek, high alpine fishing experience. The upper Deschutes is quite special in its ability to provide three completely different days within 40 miles of water, High alpine, small creek, down to a big deep winding river, this stretch has it all.
