Trip Overview

East lake is very similar to its sister lake Paulina, just a lot less of an aquarium feeling. Don’t let the murky waters fool you though. This lake still holds a massive population of trout and kokanee. Like Paulina, this lake was also formed as a result of the supervolcano that once stood 8000 feet above its current water elevation. East lake is a bit more eerie than its sister lake. It's very unique to taste sulfur in your mouth and nostrils when you're launching a boat or even get a strange smell half a mile from shore. East lake is a shallower lake than Paulina and offers a very large shelf surrounded by shiny volcanic beaches steaming out ancient sulfur and glassy obsidian flows. The fishing here can be very productive. East is also known for its large Brown trout and plentiful Rainbow trout populations as well as Kokanee. The thing that keeps people coming back here is the surreal volcanic fishing experience allowing a glimpse into a more violent time with some massive trout sprinkled into your day. We always enjoy our time out on the water here and its pungent strange smells.
