Trip Overview
The lower Deschutes is probably the most sought after fishery in the area. Anglers come from far and wide with aspirations of hooking into one of the Deschutes prized Steelhead. The fishery is primarily known for its summer run of Chinook and Steelhead but is home to many wild Rainbows and Whitefish. A day of fishing on the Lower Deschutes looks like putting in early around sunrise and chasing fish around riffles and pools all day. When the sun comes out you're greeted by stunning rock formations surrounding you on all sides, songbirds chirping their tunes, a gentle breeze whooshing in the river grasses, and the occasional plop that goes with the rising fish. When the Salmon flies hatch in early summer the fishing is the best, you will run into friends and fish all day. These people and fish are attracted by the same beauty that this big, fast, river provides. The Lower Deschutes provides some of the most attractive fly fishing opportunities for Steelhead in the state and arguably the west. This is why every year anglers local and foreign flock to this amazing fishery to test their luck for a chrome beast.
